In 1930 Congress authorized the construction of the lock and dam system on the Upper Mississippi River.  This construction guaranteed that the river would remain navigable but forever altered the human and ecological systems.  Repeat photography and computer mapping are used to discover how the Upper Mississippi has changed since the beginning of the lock and dam system.
