Mission: "Fostering appreciation of the written word, supporting and educating its creators." The MWC carries out this mission by offering writing workshops in all genres and for all skill levels; holding a poetry residency; hosting critique groups and open mic nights; coordinating an internship program for high school students; administering national poetry and chapbook contests; organizing the David R. Collins Children's Literature Festival and a national writers conference.

As a non-profit all volunteer organization, there are workshops for emerging artists, regular meetings for the many local writers groups, computers are available for working, a private office can be scheduled, resources such as magazines and books related to writing are available, there are public readings and celebrations to promote each others' success. The Center is about opportunity, support and endless possibilities. The Center is supported by memberships and donations.
