Chess master, Irving Chernev is credited as saying, “Every chess master was once a beginner.” The Bettendorf Public Library is offering young community members a chance to play with peers at the centuries-old strategy game. Starting on September 7th, elementary through high school aged students are invited to Youth Chess Club on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month from 1 PM – 2PM. The free club is held at the Library located at 2950 Learning Campus Dr. in Bettendorf and does not require registration. The Youth Chess Club will run through December 7th of this year.
Chess and the Bettendorf Public Library are natural partners. The Library seeks to provide information for all and that goal is benefited by better reading and reasoning skills. These are the exact skills that have been proven to be improved by consistent chess play. All of the materials needed for the game are available at the Library thanks to the Friends of the Bettendorf Library. Bettendorf Public Library staff members and volunteers well-versed in the game of chess will also be on hand to help guide players. If players or parents are seeking more information they can call John G. at the Library at 563-344-4188 or email email@example.com.
